Enhanced Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment (EDD)

SLP Environmental comsultants were appointed by a global manufacturer to conduct an enhanced environmental due diligence (EDD) assessment for a project site situated in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Thanlyin Township, Yangon, Myanmar as part of their overall transaction due diligence process. The primary objectives were to assess whether there were any potential environmental liabilities associated with the acquisition of the subject property and to conduct groundwater and surface waters resource evaluation studies.

The study was conducted and reported in accordance with the framework presented in ISO: 14015 (2001) – Environmental Management — Environmental Assessment of Sites and Organizations and cognisant of the IFC EHS Guideline for the proposed activity. The scope of works comprised of a detailed inspection of the property and its environs, interviews with key informants, consultations with regulators, desk study and data mining pertaining to the physical and biological environment, resource availability, historic land uses, protected areas and an operational regulatory compliance assessment for the proposed operation.

Soil samples were also collected and submitted to an ISO 17025 accredited environmental testing laboratory as part of a preliminary contamination screening exercise.

The study included an assessment of the environmental sensitivity of the study site area and a qualitative risk assessment for each identified potentially vulnerable environmental receptor and an overall environmental risk rating for the study site.

The reports also included an initial assessment regarding the groundwater resource potential underlying the project site, the availability of utilities and solid and liquid waste disposal options for the planned development.
