Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment

Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment

Former Aerospace Components Manufacturing Facility, Thailand

SLP Environmental Consultants (Thailand) was appointed to conduct a Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment (intrusive geo-environmental site investigation) at a former aero-engine precision components manufacturing facility located on the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand. The Phase 2 ESA was instructed by a potential purchaser of the facility as part of the pre-acquisition due diligence process and the primary objective of the study was to assess whether past activities on the study site had resulted in unacceptable soil and groundwater contamination.

The Phase 2 ESA was conducted in accordance with practice presented in ASTM E1903 -11: Standard Practice for Environmental Site Assessments: Phase II Environmental Site Assessment Process.

SLP developed the Statement of Objectives for client approval and subsequently designed an intrusive site investigation that targeted the likely release areas identified during the preceding Phase 1 ESA study. The scope of works included concrete coring followed by the rotary boring of three exploratory holes across the study site to depths ranging from 6 to 8m below ground level (bgl) and the recovery of soil samples for analysis at an ISO17025 accredited environmental testing laboratory.

Temporary groundwater monitoring wells were installed in the soil bores which were developed and purged in accordance with industry good practice. In-situ field monitoring for parameters such as pH, EC and dissolved oxygen was followed by the collection of groundwater samples using dedicated Teflon bailers. A wellhead position and elevation survey was undertaken to determine the hydraulic gradient in the shallow aquifer. Strict QA/QC procedures were followed throughout the study and all drilling and sampling equipment was thoroughly decontaminated between exploratory positions and field blanks and trip blanks were consigned for laboratory analysis.

The laboratory test results were compared with Thai and US EPA Tier 1 Screening Values to determine the contamination status of the property. The Phase 2 ESA report provided a full record of the works with clear conclusions, recommendations and an updated environmental risk rating for the subject property.
